03A script on change

What We Keep When We Leave

On leaving a role or relationship without denying what was real, tender or formative within it.

Leaving does not erase the love. It only asks the love to stop deciding where you are allowed to go.

Leaving can be necessary without making everything that came before it false. A chapter can end while some of its tenderness remains true.

01

The pressure to simplify

When we leave, people often want a clean story. Was it good or bad? Did you love them or not? Are you grateful, angry, relieved or grieving? Choose one, they seem to say, so we can understand.

But a life is rarely that obedient. You can remember being cared for and still name the ways you disappeared. You can feel grateful for what formed you without agreeing to remain inside it.

02

What belongs in the suitcase

You keep the song that still makes you smile. You keep the lesson you learned too painfully. You keep the version of yourself who survived by adapting, even as you teach that self a different way to live.

You do not have to carry every promise forward. Some promises were made by a person who did not yet know what staying would require.

03

Love without direction

Leaving does not erase the love. It only asks the love to stop deciding where you are allowed to go. Memory can have a home in you without becoming the map for your future.

What you keep can be tender. What you release can be honest. The two truths are allowed to leave the room together.
