01A script on belonging

The Room You No Longer Need Permission to Enter

On the moment belonging stops being something another person can grant or withdraw.

Perhaps the door was never locked. Perhaps you were waiting for a voice that was always meant to be your own.

There are rooms we stand outside long after someone has stopped guarding the door. We wait for reassurance, recognition or a final invitation, as though belonging becomes real only when another person says our name.

01

The imagined doorway

For a long time, I thought belonging was a room other people owned. They could welcome me into it, make me useful inside it, or quietly remind me that my place was temporary.

So I learned to wait at the edge. I listened for the right tone of voice. I watched faces for permission. I made myself easy to approve of before I allowed myself to arrive.

02

What changes when you enter

Then one day the waiting became heavier than the uncertainty. I stepped forward without a ceremony. Nothing dramatic happened. The room did not disappear, and no one came to remove me.

I began to understand that belonging is not always an invitation. Sometimes it is the quiet decision to stop treating your own presence as a question that someone else must answer.

03

A place of your own

You may still want to be welcomed. You may still feel the old instinct to make a case for why you deserve to stay. But wanting warmth is different from handing another person the keys to your existence.

Perhaps the door was never locked. Perhaps you were waiting for a voice that was always meant to be your own.
